OUR MISSION

The mission of the 501(c)(3) public charity nonprofit organization (Tax ID 77-0569948) Cancer Patients Alliance (“CPA”) is focused on improving health outcomes for cancer patients through cancer education, addressing health disparities and enabling cancer patients and their families to become active partners in their medical care.

CPA was founded in 2001 in Monterey County, California by physicians and community members alarmed at the lack of sufficient, reliable information to enable cancer patients to be partners in their medical care. CPA’s experience is in initiating innovative, community approaches that build on creating collaborations with organizations and health providers and engaging the community to address diversity in cancer care for Salinas Valley’s underserved.

Additionally, CPA has founded and supports the information-intensive web resources known as Pancreatica.org and NETumor.net in order to provide current, credible and comprehensive information about pancreatic cancer, and related neuroendocrine tumors.

Initiatives

Get Out the Vaccine for Covid 19
In 2021 the foundation was selected by the California GOTV medical academic consortium as led by UCLA – to conduct the “Get Out the Vaccine to Stop Covid-19” initiative for low-income populations in Monterey County, California. This has included house-to-house canvassing of residents to answer their questions about the vaccination process, make appointments for them and help with logistics; telephone and text reminders in select ZIP codes; and accessing special events.

ALCANCE
The foundation is a key community partner in the Addressing Latinx Cancer Care Equity (ALCANCE) initiative as a joint Stanford University – Monterey County, California project to provide access to the emerging DNA technologies – with cultural translation – to Latinos at risk – as funded by the California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine. As such, the foundation works closely with Stanford, the Pacific Cancer Care oncology practice and the FQHC clinic network Clinica de Salud del Valle de Salinas in genetic screening, education & prevention, and both culturally appropriate support and tumor testing.

Pancreatica.org
The purpose of this site is to act as a worldwide gathering point on the Internet for the latest news and disinterested information in regard to clinical trials and other responsible medical care in the treatment of primarily ductal adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. Additionally, our aim is to present impartial knowledge where interested parties can sort through a large amount of information efficiently in order to give a sense of the range of existing treatment options, to aid patient/doctor partnerships, and thus to help optimize personal treatment strategies.

NETumor.net
Neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas (islet cell tumors) are much less common than tumors arising from the exocrine pancreas. Reports indicate that there are about two to three thousand cases diagnosed in the U.S. each year – although autopsy indicates that there may be a much higher incidence than are diagnosed. This NET resource maintains current information about the diagnosis and treatment for neuroendocrine tumors.

Salinas Valley Alliance for Cancer Care Equity
The foundation was a 2021 recipient of a 5-year Robert Wood Johnson Foundation award to further our work with the Latinx community, immigrants and farm workers in the Salinas Valley. The aims of this initiative are to give voice to the underserved in Monterey County, California – with an aim to help effect policy change that will ensure that all residents have access to at least adequate and decent treatment and care.
